California qualification roadmap

How California attorneys satisfy the MCLE pathway

This hub covers ongoing education for California attorneys, not admission to the State Bar. Start with the attorney's actual compliance group, status history, and reporting deadline.

  1. 1

Confirm the compliance group and deadline

Use My State Bar Profile to verify the assigned reporting cycle, current status, and deadline rather than assuming a calendar-year requirement.

  2. 2

    Calculate the individual requirement

Determine whether the standard 25-hour requirement applies or whether inactive months, exemptions, or status changes create a proportional requirement.

  3. 3

    Map every required subfield

Plan legal ethics, competence, elimination of bias and implicit bias, technology, civility, and any other current specialty requirements before choosing electives.

  4. 4

    Choose eligible activities

Confirm provider or activity approval, participatory versus self-study classification, credit amount, and certificate terms before relying on an activity for California credit.

  5. 5

    Complete and retain records

Finish the activities within the compliance period and keep certificates plus the attorney's MCLE log for the required retention period.

  6. 6

Attest through My State Bar Profile

The attorney reports compliance to the State Bar and should resolve deficiencies or audit requests using the retained records.

Official California requirements

What the licensing authority requires

Reviewed July 18, 2026

Most active California attorneys complete and report Minimum Continuing Legal Education on a three-year cycle. Individual requirements can be proportional when status changes during the period.

Authority: State Bar of California

Standard three-year requirement

  • An attorney active throughout the full compliance period generally completes 25 credit hours of State Bar-approved education.
  • The current subfield list includes at least four hours of legal ethics, two hours addressing competence issues, two hours on elimination of bias including one hour focused on implicit bias, one hour on technology in law practice, and one hour on civility in law practice.
  • Attorneys track their own hours and attest to compliance through My State Bar Profile at the end of the assigned reporting cycle.

Status and credit boundaries

  • A proportional requirement may apply for months in which an attorney was not licensed, was inactive, or qualified for an exemption.
  • California credit depends on the activity and approval path. A 101PD training certificate is not MCLE credit unless the specific activity is eligible under State Bar rules.
  • Certified specialists may have separate Legal Specialist Continuing Legal Education obligations in addition to general MCLE reporting.

Verify with the licensing authority

Agency rules control. Requirements can change and individual eligibility varies. 101PD identifies each course as training, application-pending, or approved; it does not treat exam preparation as statutory credit unless the named authority has approved that specific course and provider.

Common questions

Before you choose a track

Why does every option show $0 / Free?

101PD is in its free launch period. Future prices are stored, but public payment links remain disabled until every approval and payment gate passes.

What does Available soon mean?

The public outline is ready, but the full learning content is still in production. Join that page's waitlist; enrollment cannot open until its content status is Published.

Are prelicensing, exam prep, and continuing education the same?

No. They serve different stages of a license. This page keeps them together for comparison while every card states its own purpose and credit status.

What do I receive after completion?

Training completions receive an honest training certificate. Regulator-credit certificates are issued only when the specific course and provider approval permit them.

What is the comparable market fee?

When a defensible public comparison exists, the product card names the provider, comparable offer, checked date, and source price. It is context only: the 101PD launch price remains $0 and a comparison never creates approval or enrollment rights.

Why is there no active Stripe checkout yet?

Payment links stay server-disabled while a course is drafting, while a regulated provider or course approval is pending, or while the required reporting and certificate workflow has not passed end-to-end verification.
