How to choose and earn a California pesticide credential

The work—not the course title—determines whether a person needs PCA, QAL, QAC, PAC, aircraft-pilot, business, county, or restricted-material authorization.

    Define the work and employer relationship

    Identify whether the person recommends agricultural pest control, supervises commercial work, applies on employer or owned property, flies applications, or works through a licensed pest-control business.

    Choose credential and categories

    Select PCA, QAL, QAC, PAC, or pilot status and the pesticide-use categories that match the actual work; each category is a separate examination scope.

    Document education and experience

    Provide the college coursework, work history, FAA credentials, flight time, or other qualification records required by the selected application packet.

  4. 4

    Pass laws and category examinations

    Apply through DPR or the county process, pay current fees, use the official study guides, and pass laws-and-regulations plus every required category examination.

    Add business and county authority

    Before working, complete any pest-control business license, county registration, permit, restricted-material, recommendation, supervision, or pilot registration steps.

  6. 6

    Finish CE before expiration

    Use only DPR-approved courses and complete the credential's total, law, aerial, and special-category hours during the valid period; late completion does not cure a missed CE deadline.

What the licensing authority requires

DPR licenses or certifies advisers, commercial and private applicators, and pest-control aircraft pilots. The correct credential depends on who owns the property, whether recommendations are made, whether work is for hire, and the application category.

Choose the correct credential

  • A Pest Control Adviser license covers written agricultural pest-control recommendations and requires qualifying education plus laws-and-regulations and category examinations.
  • A Qualified Applicator License generally supports supervision of a licensed pest-control business; a Qualified Applicator Certificate supports qualifying application or supervision outside that business-license role. Both require laws-and-regulations and at least one category exam.
  • A Private Applicator Certificate is generally for restricted-material use in production agriculture on property owned, leased, or rented by the applicator or employer; county agricultural commissioners administer the local process.
  • Aircraft pilots follow separate apprentice or journeyman, FAA, experience, examination, and county-registration requirements.

Applications, examinations, and fees

  • Applicants submit the current DPR packet, qualifying education or experience records where required, application fee, and exam fees for laws and regulations plus each category selected.
  • The current DPR fee table lists initial fees of $180 for QAL, $90 for QAC, and $180 for PCA, plus $115 for each examination. County PAC and registration charges can differ.
  • Passing one credential or category does not authorize work outside its scope; business, county, restricted-material permit, recommendation, supervision, and worker-safety duties may apply separately.

Continuing education

  • For a standard full renewal period, PCA requires 40 hours with at least four law hours; QAL and QAC generally require 20 hours with at least four law hours.
  • Reduced first-renewal hours depend on how many months the credential is valid. Category H and Q-only credentials have special reduced matrices.
  • Aircraft pilot certificates generally require 20 hours, including four law and four aerial hours. DPR has no grace period for completing CE after credential expiration.
  • Only DPR-approved in-person, webinar or virtual, and interactive-online courses count; the learner must complete them during the valid license period.

How 101PD becomes a CE sponsor

  • A sponsor submits each course to DPR with the current $45 fee and enough lead time for review; interactive-online applications should be submitted at least 60 days before offering.
  • Interactive courses must verify identity, measure participation, provide pesticide-context instruction and assessment, and meet the approved hour and category allocation.
  • Sponsors submit attendance within 14 days, provide completion documentation within 15 business days, and retain required records for three years.
  • 101PD exam prep remains training-only; CE products remain $0 and non-credit until each DPR approval and reporting workflow is operational.

Verify with the licensing authority

Agency rules control. Requirements can change and individual eligibility varies. 101PD identifies each course as training, application-pending, or approved; it does not treat exam preparation as statutory credit unless the named authority has approved that specific course and provider.

Why does every option show $0 / Free?

101PD is in its free launch period. Future prices are stored, but public payment links remain disabled until every approval and payment gate passes.

What does Available soon mean?

The public outline is ready, but the full learning content is still in production. Join that page's waitlist; enrollment cannot open until its content status is Published.

Are prelicensing, exam prep, and continuing education the same?

No. They serve different stages of a license. This page keeps them together for comparison while every card states its own purpose and credit status.

What do I receive after completion?

Training completions receive an honest training certificate. Regulator-credit certificates are issued only when the specific course and provider approval permit them.

What is the comparable market fee?

When a defensible public comparison exists, the product card names the provider, comparable offer, checked date, and source price. It is context only: the 101PD launch price remains $0 and a comparison never creates approval or enrollment rights.

Why is there no active Stripe checkout yet?
