How to earn and keep California RBS certification

The server owns the ABC account and exam record. The employer monitors compliance, while the approved training provider confirms course completion to unlock the state exam.

    Confirm the role is covered

    Determine whether the work involves checking identification, taking alcohol orders, pouring or delivering alcohol, or managing covered servers at an on-premises ABC license.

    Register in the RBS Portal

    Create the learner's individual account using the legal name and personal email, pay the $3 fee, and copy the nine-digit Server ID exactly as displayed.

    Complete approved training

    Choose an ABC-approved provider, course, format, and language. Give the provider the correct Server ID and last name so completion can be confirmed within 24 hours.

  4. 4

    Pass the ABC exam

    Return to the RBS Portal within 30 days, use the permitted study guide, and earn at least 70 percent on the 50-question exam within three attempts.

  5. 5

    Verify employer compliance

    Confirm the portal shows an active certification within 60 days of starting covered employment and ensure the license administrator can maintain the required roster.

  6. 6

    Recertify before three years

    Before expiration, pay the portal recertification fee, complete currently approved training, and pass a new ABC examination.

What the licensing authority requires

California's RBS program applies to covered on-premises alcohol servers and the managers who train, hire, or oversee them. Certification is a three-part ABC process; a private course certificate by itself is not the state certification.

Authority: California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC)

Who must be certified

  • Covered servers include people who check identification for alcohol service or entry, take alcohol orders, pour drinks, or deliver alcoholic beverages at an on-premises licensed location.
  • A manager of alcohol servers includes a person who directly hires, trains, or oversees covered servers at the licensed premises.
  • Servers and managers generally must be certified within 60 days of their first date of employment; local rules may add requirements but do not replace the state RBS process.

Certification and examination

  • The learner creates an individual RBS Portal account, pays the non-refundable $3 registration fee, and obtains a nine-digit Server ID before training.
  • The learner must complete training from a provider and course that are approved at the time of training. The provider has 24 hours to confirm completion in the RBS Portal.
  • Within 30 days after confirmed training, the learner has three attempts to earn at least 70 percent on ABC's 50-question, self-paced, open-book exam; ABC allows up to two hours.
  • Certification lasts three years. Recertification repeats portal payment, approved training, and the ABC exam before expiration.

Training format and provider approval

  • ABC recognizes online self-paced and instructor-led training. ABC says provider course length generally ranges from 90 minutes to four hours.
  • ABC approves the training curriculum rather than an individual trainer. Each delivery format and language must follow the applicable approval record and portal workflow.
  • The non-refundable course-approval fee is $1,000, annual renewal is $250 per approved course, and an ownership or officer update is $250.
  • 101PD cannot unlock the ABC exam, confirm a completion, or advertise certification credit until its course approval and portal integration are active.

Verify with the licensing authority

Agency rules control. Requirements can change and individual eligibility varies. 101PD identifies each course as training, application-pending, or approved; it does not treat exam preparation as statutory credit unless the named authority has approved that specific course and provider.

Are prelicensing, exam prep, and continuing education the same?

No. They serve different stages of a license. This page keeps them together for comparison while every card states its own purpose and credit status.

What do I receive after completion?

Training completions receive an honest training certificate. Regulator-credit certificates are issued only when the specific course and provider approval permit them.

What is the comparable market fee?

When a defensible public comparison exists, the product card names the provider, comparable offer, checked date, and source price. It is context only: the 101PD launch price remains $0 and a comparison never creates approval or enrollment rights.
