How a California RN maintains an active license

Begin with the nurse's actual BRN record and renewal date. The standard 30-hour rule is a baseline; first-renewal, advanced-practice, inactive, delinquent, and lapsed statuses can add or change requirements.

    Confirm license status, expiration date, advanced-practice authorities, first-renewal status, and any disciplinary or individualized education conditions in BreEZe.

    Plan 30 contact hours within the two-year period and identify whether one hour of direct-participation implicit bias, gerontology, dementia, or another individual condition applies.

    Confirm the provider's California CEP number is active and that the course content, instructor, objectives, method, and contact hours fall within BRN's acceptable professional-nursing scope.

    Complete and document each activity

    Meet the activity's participation and evaluation requirements and retain a certificate showing provider number, learner, title, date, and contact hours.

    Renew and pay the BRN fee

What the licensing authority requires

This catalog covers continuing education for an existing California RN license, not approval of a nursing school or preparation for initial NCLEX-RN licensure. Renewal content must be above entry-level nursing and offered by a recognized provider.

Authority: California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN)

Standard renewal

  • An active California RN generally completes 30 contact hours during each two-year renewal period and pays the renewal fee; the current timely RN renewal fee is $190.
  • Courses must be completed during the preceding renewal period through a BRN-recognized provider. Nurses should verify the provider's active CEP number in BreEZe before relying on credit.
  • The nurse retains completion certificates and reports compliance as part of renewal; a provider certificate does not renew the license by itself.

Individual subject requirements and exceptions

  • A nurse in the first two years immediately following initial licensure must complete one hour of direct-participation implicit-bias education from a BRN-approved provider.
  • A nurse practitioner whose primary-care patient population is more than 25 percent age 65 or older must include at least six of the 30 hours in gerontology, dementia, or care of older patients.
  • Inactive, delinquent, lapsed, military, retired, and advanced-practice statuses can change fees, evidence, or competency requirements; the individual BRN record controls.

Acceptable course boundary

  • Eligible content must be relevant to the scientific knowledge or technical skills required for nursing practice and generally above the level required for initial RN licensure.
  • Course objectives, instructor qualifications, learning method, evaluation, contact-hour calculation, certificate fields, and records must satisfy BRN regulations.
  • General personal growth, employer orientation, routine staff meetings, and content unrelated to professional nursing are not converted into RN contact hours merely by placing them in a course shell.

How 101PD becomes a BRN provider

  • BRN approves continuing-education providers rather than reviewing each course in advance. The application must document the responsible coordinator, sample course, instructor, objectives, evaluation, policies, certificate, and record system.
  • The current provider application fee is $750. Provider approval is renewed every two years for $750 when timely or $1,125 when delinquent.
  • 101PD must display its active CEP number on eligible materials and certificates and keep the supporting course and learner records required by BRN.
  • All nursing products remain $0 and non-credit until the CEP number is active and course-level compliance has been reviewed.
