California qualification roadmap

How to qualify for a California contractor license

Choose the CSLB classification and qualifying individual first. California contractor eligibility is primarily experience-based; private exam prep does not replace the experience requirement.

  1. 1

    Choose the license classification

Identify the A, B, C, or limited-specialty classification that matches the work to be performed and confirm whether a trade examination applies.

  2. 2

    Document qualifying experience

Prepare verifiable journey-level, foreman, supervisor, contractor, or qualifying owner-builder experience within CSLB's required lookback period.

  3. 3

    Submit the CSLB application

Name the qualifying individual and provide the current application, experience certification, fees, fingerprints, and supporting records requested by CSLB.

  4. 4

    Prepare from official study guides

Use the current CSLB Law and Business guide and the classification-specific trade guide, including topic weights and official reference lists.

  5. 5

    Pass the required examinations

Most qualifiers pass Law and Business plus the applicable trade examination unless a current waiver or classification exception applies.

  6. 6

    Complete issuance and renewal requirements

Satisfy current bond, insurance, personnel, fee, and license-issuance requirements, then keep the entity and qualifying-person information current through renewal.

What the licensing authority requires

Reviewed July 18, 2026

CSLB qualification is experience-based. Exam-preparation courses can help a candidate study, but CSLB does not require a private-school education program to qualify for the license.

Authority: Contractors State License Board (CSLB)

Eligibility and experience

  • The qualifying individual must be at least 18 and generally document four years of journey-level, foreman, supervisor, contractor, or qualifying owner-builder experience in the classification.
  • The experience must fall within the ten years before application and be verified by a qualified person with firsthand knowledge.
  • CSLB can grant up to three years of experience credit for specified education or training, but at least one year must be practical experience.

Examinations

  • Most qualifying individuals pass the standard Law and Business exam and a second exam for the requested trade or classification; the C-61 Limited Specialty classification is an exception to the trade-exam rule.
  • The Law and Business exam covers business organization and licensing, finances, employment, insurance and liens, contracts, public works, and safety.
  • CSLB examinations are multiple choice and closed book. CSLB publishes free study guides with topic weights, sample questions, resources, and test strategy.

Verify with the licensing authority

Agency rules control. Requirements can change and individual eligibility varies. 101PD identifies each course as training, application-pending, or approved; it does not treat exam preparation as statutory credit unless the named authority has approved that specific course and provider.

Common questions

Before you choose a track

Why does every option show $0 / Free?

101PD is in its free launch period. Future prices are stored, but public payment links remain disabled until every approval and payment gate passes.

What does Available soon mean?

The public outline is ready, but the full learning content is still in production. Join that page's waitlist; enrollment cannot open until its content status is Published.

Are prelicensing, exam prep, and continuing education the same?

No. They serve different stages of a license. This page keeps them together for comparison while every card states its own purpose and credit status.

What do I receive after completion?

Training completions receive an honest training certificate. Regulator-credit certificates are issued only when the specific course and provider approval permit them.

What is the comparable market fee?

When a defensible public comparison exists, the product card names the provider, comparable offer, checked date, and source price. It is context only: the 101PD launch price remains $0 and a comparison never creates approval or enrollment rights.

Why is there no active Stripe checkout yet?

Payment links stay server-disabled while a course is drafting, while a regulated provider or course approval is pending, or while the required reporting and certificate workflow has not passed end-to-end verification.
