California qualification roadmap

How the California BBS Law and Ethics exam fits the license path

Choose LMFT, LCSW, or LPCC first. Each profession has its own education, associate registration, supervised-experience, Law and Ethics examination, and clinical-examination rules.

  1. 1

    Choose the exact BBS profession

Use the current BBS applicant guide for LMFT, LCSW, or LPCC. Do not treat the three licenses or their Law and Ethics examinations as interchangeable.

  2. 2

    Complete the profession's education review

Confirm degree, coursework, practicum, and any California-specific education deficiencies before or during the associate-registration process.

  3. 3

    Obtain and maintain associate registration

Follow the applicable AMFT, ASW, or APCC registration and renewal rules while accruing supervised experience.

  4. 4

Take the correct Law and Ethics exam

Associates must take the profession-specific California Law and Ethics examination annually until passing and must pass it for a subsequent registration.

  5. 5

Complete supervised experience and apply for licensure

Accrue, document, and submit the profession-specific supervised experience and resolve any deficiencies under the current BBS rules.

  6. 6

    Pass the required clinical examination

After BBS approves eligibility, complete the applicable California or national clinical examination and the final license-issuance steps.

Official California requirements

What the licensing authority requires

Reviewed July 21, 2026

BBS uses a separate California Law and Ethics examination for each LMFT, LCSW, and LPCC license path. 101PD keeps the three preparation products separate and does not represent exam prep as approved continuing education.

Authority: California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS)

Profession-specific examinations

  • LMFT, LCSW, and LPCC candidates take different California Law and Ethics examinations and apply for each examination separately.
  • An associate must take the applicable examination annually until passing, must pass before a subsequent associate registration, and must pass before full licensure.
  • A candidate who needs to retake a California Law and Ethics examination is subject to the Board's current re-examination process and waiting period.

101PD training boundary

  • Each product follows its own profession-specific scope and original question bank; the courses are not interchangeable.
  • Exam-preparation completion is training only and does not earn BBS continuing-education credit.
  • Candidates should confirm current Board instructions and law changes before scheduling or retaking an examination.

Verify with the licensing authority

Agency rules control. Requirements can change and individual eligibility varies. 101PD identifies each course as training, application-pending, or approved; it does not treat exam preparation as statutory credit unless the named authority has approved that specific course and provider.

Common questions

Before you choose a track

Why does every option show $0 / Free?

101PD is in its free launch period. Future prices are stored, but public payment links remain disabled until every approval and payment gate passes.

What does Available soon mean?

The public outline is ready, but the full learning content is still in production. Join that page's waitlist; enrollment cannot open until its content status is Published.

Are prelicensing, exam prep, and continuing education the same?

No. They serve different stages of a license. This page keeps them together for comparison while every card states its own purpose and credit status.

What do I receive after completion?

Training completions receive an honest training certificate. Regulator-credit certificates are issued only when the specific course and provider approval permit them.

What is the comparable market fee?

When a defensible public comparison exists, the product card names the provider, comparable offer, checked date, and source price. It is context only: the 101PD launch price remains $0 and a comparison never creates approval or enrollment rights.

Why is there no active Stripe checkout yet?

Payment links stay server-disabled while a course is drafting, while a regulated provider or course approval is pending, or while the required reporting and certificate workflow has not passed end-to-end verification.
